Description
The Head of Department – Microbiology ensures the safe & efficient operation of the Microbiology Department and also assists in training, supervising and evaluating the performance of all department staff. The position entails employee supervision, coaching, resolving issues and serving as a link between subordinates and upper management.
The HOD must be competent in the area and must be able to guide and train employees. He/she will be well-versed in processes under the role’s responsibility and will be results-driven and focused. The goal is to ensure that operations are carried out productively so as to ensure profitability and sustainable growth in the department which further impacts the organization
A typical HOD – Microbiology Job Description should include, but not be limited to:
- Organizing workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
- Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching
- Assist and provide guidance to staff with quality control procedures and documentation to support compliance with ISO 15189 standards
- Implement the use of protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results. Mirrors conformity to protocols
- Define reference Ranges/Values using statistical methods as described in the Standard Operating Procedures
- Evaluate the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology with five (5) years relevant experience in Microbiology
- Registered Medical Technologist
- Proven experience in a Supervisory position/role
- Must have working knowledge of laboratory procedures
- Experience in the preparation and conducting assessment for ISO15189 Accreditation
